Everyone reacts to stress and traumatic experiences differently. While some have reactions that can be seen as normal responses to life events, others may experience signs or symptoms of more serious conditions.
Mental (Behavioral) Health and substance misuse conditions can affect anyone; you are not alone. The Military Health System has many resources available to help those who need it.

Scott AFB Mental Health Services
Our facility offers the following mental (behavioral) health services:
- Mental (Behavioral) Health Services offers vectoring for services; individual assessment and treatment; group therapy; and medication management; call 618-256-7386.
- Family Advocacy Services offers family maltreatment assessments, individual and couples counseling; group therapy; New Parent Support Program; Family Advocacy Strengths-based Therapy, and the following classes: Active Parenting of Teens; Anger Management; Baby Safety; Breastfeeding; Conflict Resolution, Co-parenting through Divorce; Dads, the Basics; Emotional Intelligence; Love and Logic; Newborn Care; Parenting and Teen Dialogue; Skills, Strengths, Techniques, and Resources; call 618-256-7203.
- Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program offers substance use assessments and education, individual treatment, and group therapy; call 618-256-7386.
Mental (Behavioral) Health Services
The Mental (Behavioral) Health element enhances the health and readiness of the community by providing MH assessment, education, consultation, and treatment services to the beneficiary population through a variety of evidence-based therapeutic modalities.
Service members can be referred in two ways: self-identification and medical referral.
Services are typically a combination of individual, group and medication therapy modalities based on individual needs.

Family Advocacy Services
We provide family counseling, couple's counseling, parenting counseling, and treatment services through a variety of evidence-based therapeutic modalities. We provide intervention services for adult and child maltreatment cases. We provide prevention services for families, couples, and parents through general counseling, outreach classes, and new parent support for families with children ages newborn to three years old. Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program
The Scott AFB ADAPT Program provides comprehensive substance use education, prevention, and treatment services for active-duty service members.
Services Offered:
- Substance Use Assessments: Evaluations to determine treatment needs.
- Education & Prevention: Brief counseling, outreach, and skills-based training.
- Treatment & Aftercare: Individual and group therapy tailored to severity of use.
- Referral Coordination: Assistance with placement in detox, residential, and intensive outpatient programs as needed.
- Command Consultation: Guidance for leadership on managing substance-related concerns.
Referral Process:
Higher Level of Care Referrals: When clinically appropriate, ADAPT facilitates referrals to:
- Detox Services: Medical stabilization for withdrawal management
- Residential Treatment Programs: Inpatient care for moderate to severe substance use disorders
- Intensive Outpatient Programs: Structured, non-residential treatment for substance use recovery

Primary Care Behavioral Health

- First stop for mental health help within the military treatment facility
- Four to six sessions, 30 minutes each, short-term therapy with direct interventions focused on behavioral change
- Provides targeted intervention for mild-moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, sleep concerns, adjustment/transition
- Records of sessions are kept in the military electronic health records system
Military One Source

- Location: Office of an off-base therapist
- Individuals will be matched with off-base therapists for 12-20 free, 45-60-minute sessions, which often occur on a weekly basis
- More suitable for individuals meeting criteria for mental health conditions (i.e. anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, etc.)
- Records are kept of visits and may be requested by the military mental health system
Military Family Life Counselors

- Provides free. Supportive-based counseling to active duty service members and dependents
- Provides support for individuals dealing with adjustment/transition issues, stress, marital difficulties, deployment cycle issues, communication, aggression, parenting, and grief/loss

TRICARE covers medically and psychologically necessary mental health and substance use care.
